"Offering services through professional referral in surgery and dentistry."
Doctor Evzen BurianDoctor Evzen Burian graduated with the degree of Medicinae Veterinariae Doctoris from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Brno, Czechoslovakia in 1973. The University opened in 1918 as an extension of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, and has maintained the Vienna tradition of high standards of education. During this veterinary school's six year program, Dr. Burian completed a pre-doctoral residency in surgery in his final three years. In 1976, he received board attestation in medicine and surgery, as recognition of expertise in these fields. During his post as coordinator and surgeon in Kolin County's thirty-five doctor hospital, Dr. Burian completed a three year fellowship at the Kolin Medical Center as a clinical associate in the orthopedic department with the chief of surgery, Jan Vírava, MD. Dr. Burian has received extensive training in veterinary dentistry and has become a pioneer in the field of veterinary dental care. From 1975 to 1982, Dr. Burian was a member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in the capacity of lecturer for post-doctoral Continuing Education classes in the fields of surgery and dentistry. Dr. Burian feels strongly about aiding young people in their pursuit of a career in veterinary surgery. He recognizes the importance of teaching the clinical applications of surgical techniques and protocols in private practice. Each spring, Dr. Burian returns to Europe as an adjunct professor of surgery at his alma mater in Brno. He also lectures each year at the Institute of Continuing Education (Veteduka) in Prague, Czech Republic. In the spring of 2001, Dr. Burian also lectured at the Vienna School of Veterinary Medicine in Austria. Since Dr. Burian received his surgical training in Europe (residency, research and publications), he is unable to claim the title of specialist in the U.S. The American Board of Veterinary Surgeons offers no reciprocity for most foreign veterinary surgeons. However, his surgical and dental practice has been highly successful, and we are proud to offer many references from his colleagues as well as past clients. Many people are curious about Dr. Burian's immigration to the U.S. From the beginning of his veterinary career, Dr. Burian worked with exotic species and wildlife. He served as a staff surgeon for the Prague Zoological Park for seven years, in addition to his regular practice. His avid interest and concern for wildlife inspired him to complete a post-doctoral Master of Science in Wildlife and Game Management from the University of Agriculture and Forestry, Faculty of Forestry in 1976. Combining his skills as surgeon and wildlife biologist, Dr. Burian became a recognized authority in surgical techniques for birds of prey. His publications in this field led to an invitation from Cornell University to lecture on his techniques and exchange experience. Because at that time his native country was still under communist rule, Dr. Burian defected to the United States in 1982. After obtaining his U.S. license to practice veterinary medicine, Dr. Burian worked as surgeon for a five doctor veterinary hospital in Austin, Texas until 1989. He then opened his own full service clinic in Virginia Beach, where he accepted surgical referrals from his colleagues. In October of 1998, Dr. Evzen Burian opened The Center for Animal Surgery and Dentistry. He now devotes his time exclusively to surgery and dentistry referrals from his colleagues in the greater Hampton Roads area. |
